PTSD Support Policy for Firefighters in All Safety Regions

All 25 safety regions have now introduced a policy to help employees and volunteers who develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during their work. The Employers' Association of Cooperating Safety Regions (WVSV) confirmed this update.

Under the scheme, firefighters and others working in safety regions with PTSD as an occupational illness will receive support. This includes wage supplements during sickness, extra payments on disability benefits, medical cost reimbursements, and income support.

There is also financial help for other costs like household assistance, childcare, and transportation, as stated by WVSV.

Plans for Broader Expansion and Long-Term Funding
Currently, this scheme is focused on staff and volunteers in safety regions, such as fire departments. However, there are plans to possibly extend this support to other fields where PTSD occurs more often, like the police and ambulance services.

Officials are also considering setting up long-term funding and evaluations to maintain the program's effectiveness.

Retroactive Support from February 2026
The new policy will take effect from February 1, 2026. Employees and volunteers will be able to claim benefits retroactively for up to five years from this date. Additionally, earlier this month, the Tweede Kamer, which is the lower house of the Dutch parliament, announced an investment of 1.

75 million euros specifically for supporting firefighters with PTSD.
