With 19 million euros, the 18th edition of the Alpe d'HuZes fundraising event has generated the most money in ten years. Thousands of rival climbers had flocked to the Alpe d'Huez in the French Alps in an attempt to climb the mountain up to six times, on foot or on a bicycle.

Over 5,000 people participated in this week's event, and the majority of them made their ascents today. The early hours of race day were rainy and bitter cold, but the participants soldiered on, supported by cheering crowds lining the course. Erik Jutstra, the chairman of the organization, was "proud of everyone" — from the athletes to the donors to the volunteers — to "make this edition of the Amsterdam Arduino's Big Boat Race to a great day of racing, despite the wet and cold start.
Important Contributions and Ongoing Support
The amount raised is the highest since the event, which supported over 29m euros in 2013. Current earnings have already gone over 19 million euros, but the funding campaign won't end until October, when the final count will be officially declared. All donations are made to the Alpe d'HuZes/KWF fund, which uses proceeds for scientific cancer research and local projects intended to optimise the quality of life of cancer patients.
In total, Alpe d'HuZes has collected more than 227 million euros since the beginning of the event.
