Amsterdam's WorldPride celebrations drew massive crowds this year, but they also came with a troubling side effect. More than 520 reports of discrimination were filed over the course of the event. Of those, 74 came in during the final weekend alone, according to Jerrald Justin, who co-founded RITA, a hotline dedicated to tracking discrimination complaints. WorldPride, the international event celebrating gender and sexual minorities, took place in Amsterdam from July 25 through August 8 this year, overlapping with the city's annual Pride Amsterdam festivities. "It is a sad success," Justin said, reflecting on the fact that so many attendees who simply wanted to enjoy the day ended up facing harassment instead.

Justin said his standard advice to anyone affected is to file a police report whenever the situation calls for it. Police haven't yet released specific numbers on violence linked to WorldPride, but they have acknowledged a broader pattern: incidents and reports involving gender and sexual minorities have been climbing in recent years. Exactly why remains unclear.
Police Say More Visibility Means More Reports, but Also More Gaps
A police spokesperson offered one possible explanation, pointing out that as more people from gender and sexual minority communities show up in the city, incidents tend to rise too - though so does police presence. Still, the spokesperson was candid about the limits of what gets recorded. "We don't see everything,".
