The Dutch political party Partij voor de Dieren (Party of the Animals) has published a new manifesto which includes radical proposals to reform animal welfare, agriculture and climate policies.

Animal Welfare at the Core
The party, which currently has three members in parliament and is poised to win anywhere between four and six in the October 29 election, is aiming at getting constitutional rights for farmed animals. The Netherlands is home to over 100 million farmed animals, and the party is in favour of creating more transparency in how these are treated. It recommends installing walls of glass in parts of slaughterhouses and animal housing facilities so the public can see what takes place behind them.
The manifesto also recommends an outright ban on several farming sectors, such as fish farming, rabbit farming and goat farming. It also proposes that all people who want to own a pet should take a compulsory course first.
Repurposing Farmland and Climate Policies
The party says better use of the land could include repurposing for affordable housing after cutting back cattle farming by at least 75%.
Other ideas include prohibiting cruise ships, private jets, large pickup trucks, and allocating 5% of gross domestic product to climate change adaptation and nature.
The manifesto also addresses wider human rights issues, including recognising a Palestinian state and imposing sanctions on Israel and Russia. It also calls for the adoption of a shorter week, down to 32 hours.
The list is topped by party leader Esther Ouwehand, followed by MPs Ines Kostić and Christ.
