Dutch PM Calls Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Key Step

Interim Prime Minister Dick Schoof said the meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, which is planned for Monday, would be a key step to stop Russia's ongoing attacks against Ukraine. He added that the discussions could be a "preparatory stage" leading to a fuller summit that should eventually involve Russian President Vladimir Putin in addition to Zelenskyy and Trump.

Schoof reiterated that Ukraine has the exclusive right to decide on its territorial integrity. "The direct involvement of U.S.

President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelenskyy can contribute to even greater approximation of positions towards the peace plan," he added.

EU Leaders and NATO Chief to Be There
The meeting with Zelenskyy and Trump will include a number of leaders of the European Union, as well as the NATO chief, Mark Rutte. This delegation aims to convince Trump to make a strong statement in support of Ukraine during times of war.

The Netherlands will not directly participate in the meeting. Other nations in the "Coalition of the Willing," a coalition of partners that support Ukraine, will speak to the Dutch position, said Schoof. He said that he was sure these EU leaders would sufficiently reflect the Netherlands' position.

Security Guarantees Under Review
Schoof added that, where possible assurances for Ukraine's security are concerned, the Netherlands needs to be cautious in issuing promises. "We have always said we will take this seriously, first from Cabinet and then from parliament. And it also depends on what the talks (in the next few days) will be," he added.

The comment underscores the wary yet supportive stance of the Dutch government as global leaders try to find ways to bolster Ukraine i.
