Dutch Power Output Rises 7% in Early 2025

Electric power generation in the Netherlands experienced a steep increase in the first half of 2025, totalling nearly 64 billion kilowatt-hours. This represents a 7 percent gain compared to the same time frame in 2024, inflating both fossil fuel generation and renewable energy generation.

Fossil Fuels and Renewable Sources
Generation rose from coal and natural gas over the course of the first six months, while wind was down due to weak wind speeds both onshore and offshore. Mannifests collectively produced 48 percent of total electricity generation from solar, wind, and biomass. Solar was a strong performer in the second quarter, buoyed by sunnier weather relative to the previous year.

Exports and Consumption
Despite the increased generation, consumption in the Netherlands was steady compared to the previous year in 2024. Most of the surplus energy was exported to Belgium and Germany, including all-time highs in the first quarter of 2025..
