Dutch Public Backs the Monarchy But Grows Uneasy About Rising Royal Costs

Support for the Dutch monarchy is holding steady, but a growing number of people are questioning what it all costs. A new annual survey conducted by Ipsos I&O among 1,000 Dutch residents aged 18 and older shows that public backing for King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and Princess Amalia has remained largely unchanged from the previous year. While the overall picture looks stable, one number stands out sharply — those who feel the Royal House is too expensive jumped from 34 percent in 2025 to 49 percent this year, signalling a clear shift in public sentiment around finances.

Approval Ratings Hold, But Interest Is Fading
Six in ten Dutch people, exactly 62 percent, still want the monarchy to continue. The share favouring a republic dipped slightly from 22 percent last year to 20 percent in 2026. As has long been the trend, older generations are more enthusiastic about retaining the monarchy at 69 percent, compared to 52 percent among younger people.



When it comes to individual ratings, Queen Máxima continues to lead the pack. She scored the highest among the three royals at 7.5, followed by Princess Amalia at 7.

3, and King Willem-Alexander at 6.9. Satisfaction with the King's performance also improved noticeably — 53 percent expressed satisfaction this year, up from 47 percent in 2025.



That said, general curiosity about the Royal House appears to be cooling. Only 21 percent of respondents said they follow royal affairs with interest, a notable drop from 27 percent the previous year.

Mixed Views on Royal Activities and the White House Visit
The public gave a warm reception to Queen Máxima and Princess Amalia's involvement with the Ministry of Defense, with 58 percent saying they appreciate the royal family dedicating time to that area.

However, awareness of Máxima's international work, particularly her role at the United Nations, has slipped. Just 10 percent said they have a clear understanding of what she does there, .
