Dutch Students Turn Away from U.S. Due to Uncertain Visa Policies

An increasing number of Dutch students are having second thoughts about studying in the United States for fear of visa policy uncertainty, Nuffic, the national organization for internationalization in education in the Netherlands, reported. The agency is cautioning that if visa challenges continue, fewer students will select the United States as a study destination.

Students Upset By Confusion
Nuffic notes that there are several thousand Dutch students in the U.S. every year, making it the fourth most popular study destination after Belgium, the UK and Germany.

But a series of policy changes upcoming under President Donald Trump's administration have prompted concern and confusion.

One key area of concern is a proposal to screen the social media postings of foreign students before granting them a visa to study in the United States. In the meantime, students can't even book an embassy interview.

That, along with concerns that if they come to the United States, their visas might not be honored, has added further anxiety for prospective students.

Concerns Over the Future
While current figures remain stable, many students are now wondering if the U.S.

is worth the risk. "Perhaps the rules change, as they have around import tariffs, but students don't wait for such capriciousness," a Nuffic spokesperson said.

Since students generally make their plans a year ahead, Nuffic warns that persistent uncertainty will result in a far bigger drop next year.

"Some students select the U.S. for particular schools.

Such a decision "is not very portable to another country," the organization said.
Nuffic avoids making political statements, but the organization emphasized that uncertainty surrounding entry requirements had al.
