Goalkeeper Scherpen Joins Dutch Squad for Qualifiers; No Steijn or Brobbey

AMSTERDAM – The coach of Spain de Stam has announced a selection of 20 men for the next World Cup matches against Finland (on June 7) and Malta (on 10th). Partilhar esta notícia. The 24-year-old goalkeeper is currently with Sturm Graz, and he has never played a minute for the team's senior national side.


Scherpen was kept as back-up after the second and third selections were ruled out when Ajax's Bart Verbruggen (Oranje's regular No 1) failed to recover from physical issues. In Verbruggen's absence, Mark Flekken is expected to start in goal, with Scherpen, joined by Nick Olij of Sparta Rotterdam, also included in the squad.


He also played for FC Emmen and then at Ajax, before going abroad, taking in Brighton & Hove Albion, KV Oostende, Vitesse and most recently Sturm Graz, where he won the Austrian league last season. At 2.06, he is the man mountain in the Dutch goalkeeping group.

Notable Excuses: Steijn and Brobbey Stayed Home
One of the more eye-catching omissions is Sem Steijn, Eredivisie top scorer with 31 for FC Twente on all fronts this season. Good form but the 23-year-old attacking midfielder wasn't included in Welington Ramos' squad.
