Ajax are poised to re-appoint John Heitinga as head coach, two years after his last stint at the club. The 41-year-old assistant, currently at Liverpool, has been given permission to hold talks with the Dutch side. Ajax view Heitinga as a successor to Francesco Farioli, who resigned at the beginning of this month after one year.

After being knocked out in 2023, Heitinga gets a second chance
Heitinga was made interim head coach at Ajax two years ago after the departure of Alfred Schreuder. His first stint showed potential, but the team came up short of the top league positions and the KNVB Cup as well. Heitinga left the club when then director Sven Mislintat didn't extend his contract.
He would later work as number two at West Ham United and Liverpool, where he worked under Arne Slot. Heitinga moves back to Ajax with further experience and a Premier League title under his belt.
Ajax Forced to Settle for Heitinga After Missing Out on Ten Hag
Ajax at first wanted to rehire Erik ten Hag as head coach, but he signed this week as the coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
Other prospective applicants Michael Reiziger and Paul Simonis have also committed themselves to Jong Oranje and Go Ahead Eagles, respectively. Marcel Keizer was another one but he would probably be the assistant who could help Heitinga with his experience. Heitinga now has the opportunity to coach Ajax and aim for top success at the top level.
