Mayor Criticizes Police for Missing Social Media Cues in Riots

The riots in Scheveningen earlier this month shocked and disappointed many, including The Hague's Mayor Jan van Zanen. Speaking during a city council debate, the mayor pointed out that the police had missed key "soft signals" from social media, where young people were organizing to gather in the area. While there was no clear call to riot, he emphasized that the authorities should have recognized the warning signs.

The disturbances began on May 1 when groups of young people clashed with one another and with the police, hurling stones, chairs, and glass bottles. Following the riots, police arrested a 17-year-old from Rotterdam and a 16-year-old from The Hague.

Van Zanen expressed his dismay, saying, "Shame on you" to those involved in the violence, and pointed out that no parents had come forward to take responsibility for the young offenders.
