Dry Weather's Impact
The Marechaussee claimed their smoke grenades are harmless, but it had been a prolonged dry summer. The dry conditions of the heath and brush may readily ignite as a result of an incendiary device. Warnings were in place for personnel to act with caution in similar dry conditions and to be aware of any flare-ups after the training was complete.

Personnel also had directions to ensure that all smoking device fuses were burned out before vacating the area. Event commanders and exercise controllers emphasized through directions that personnel monitor the devices until they are extinguished.
Prior Occurrences at Training Facility
This was not the first fire that occurred at the Oirschot military training area. On August 4, during a training exercise, a fire started that ignited an area of heath for a size of 100 meters by 100 meters. Earlier in April, a larger fire in Ede occurred after the use of a training grenade was identified as the cause.
