The Netherlands is heading into one of its most uncomfortable stretches of weather this summer. A combination of soaring temperatures and heavy humidity is set to grip the entire country over the coming days, prompting authorities to issue official warnings and activate emergency health plans. With thermometers expected to climb as high as 35 degrees Celsius, both health agencies and weather forecasters are urging residents to take the situation seriously.

Heat Warning in Effect Across the Country
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute has placed almost the entire country under a code yellow alert for oppressive heat, with only the Wadden Islands excluded. The warning runs from 10:00 a.m.
Thursday through at least Saturday. What makes this period particularly challenging is not just the heat itself, but the humidity layered on top of it. Together, they push the heat index to between 7 and 9, especially across the southeastern regions.
Thursday will see highs of 27 to 32 degrees, while Friday turns hotter still, with temperatures ranging from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. The weekend outlook remains uncertain, though forecasters expect the heat to persist, particularly in the southeast. Monday could bring another round of 30 to 35 degrees nationwide.
Health Risks and What Residents Are Advised to Do
The National Heat Plan came into effect Thursday at 10:00 a.m., coordinated by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.
Healthcare workers and caregivers are being asked to pay close attention to elderly people and young children, who are most at risk during prolonged heat events. Recommended steps include ensuring easy access to drinking water, moving outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day, and taking practical steps to keep homes as cool as possible.
Symptoms like dehydration and overheating can affect anyone engaged in.
