The five people arrested now face charges tied to organized crime membership, drug trafficking, money laundering, and hiding assets from creditors. The case paints a picture of a group that wasn't just moving drugs, but also working hard to make the profits look clean through property deals.
Leader Called "Financial Architect" of the Coast
The man believed to be running the operation was also taken into custody as part of the sweep. Investigators have nicknamed him the "financial architect" of the Costa del Sol, pointing to his role laundering money not just for this group but reportedly for other criminal outfits as well. He wasn't a stranger to law enforcement either - cases against him were already open in several countries, Belgium included, before this latest arrest.
Raids Timed to Stop an Escape
What pushed the operation forward, according to officials, was word that the alleged ringleader was getting ready to leave Europe altogether. That would have made catching up with him far harder, so police moved quickly. In late June, teams raided properties in both Málaga and the Netherlan.
