Stanford University in California is laying off 363 employees as it grapples with massive budget shortfalls. It follows a mandate from the Trump administration to slash costs in federally funded programs, which would leave the university $140 million short. The layoffs will be spread across different departments and faculty levels at the university.

Recent decisions to withhold government funding have put Stanford among other American universities. The administration has blasted universities for being too politically left-wing and not doing enough to crack down on antisemitism in student-led protests supporting Palestine last month.
Stanford University: Economic and political uncertainty
Stanford President Jon Levin cited present economic conditions in an official statement.
"Things have changed and we are in a very uncertain world," he said. The cuts in staff are anticipated to affect daily administrative duties, as well as academic and research work.
Job cuts are symptomatic of the wobbles in funding higher education nationally.
Now, the pressure to continue underwriting programs on federal money is being felt in many of those institutions as well.
Other Universities Also Impacted
And Stanford is not alone in feeling the effects of subsidy cuts. In reality, Columbia University in New York has had to make a similar number of job cuts as well.
The more-than-monthlong trend points to a new, grim reality: as financial support becomes increasingly unpredictable, additional educational institutions could find themselves faced with such hard choices.
