Tuesday morning turned into a headache for commuters as a technical failure knocked out train services across wide stretches of the Netherlands. The worst of the disruption is hitting routes heading to and from the north and east of the country. Railway infrastructure managers confirmed the problem, while the national rail operator flagged trouble on 23 different routes, with many seeing no trains at all, though a handful of those issues may be separate from this particular breakdown.

What's Actually Causing the Chaos
At the heart of the problem is a malfunctioning safety system, the kind of technology that's supposed to detect whether a train is sitting on a given stretch of track. When that system goes down, rail controllers lose the ability to confirm with certainty whether a track is clear or occupied. And without that certainty, sending trains through simply isn't safe, so services grind to a halt instead.
According to a spokesperson for the infrastructure authority, the safety system has failed at 13 separate locations, and right now, nobody knows exactly why. "We are currently investigating the matter," the spokesperson explained, adding that a fix could come quickly once the root cause is pinned down, but finding that cause has to happen first.
Which Routes Are Hit Hardest
The list of affected connections is long.
No trains are running between Amersfoort and Zwolle, Utrecht and Arnhem, or Arnhem and Zutphen. The same goes for Amersfoort to Ede-Wageningen, Amersfoort to Deventer, and Zwolle to Leeuwarden. Services between Zwolle and Almelo, Zwolle and Deventer, and Deventer and Enschede have also been suspended, alongside another halt between Amersfoort and Deventer.
