Teen Vaping Rises as Young Adult Use Declines

Vaping is growing strongly among adolescents, but for the first time in years fewer young adults are taking up the popular e-cigarette and vaporizer phenomenon. New figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) will make worrying reading for the government. The numbers are from the National Youth Monitor, showing changing patterns of nicotine use.

Vaping Increases Among Teens
By 2023, 7.6 percent of Dutch children 12 to 18 had ever used an e-cigarette, compared with 6.1 percent the previous year.

Tobacco smoking among teenagers also increased slightly, furthering concerns about total nicotine use among this group of young people.

The Vaping Tide Begins to Turn According to recent surveys Fewer young adults are vaping.

The percentage of young adults ages 18 to 25 who vape fell after a sharp rise — to 8.

6 percent last year, from 13 percent in 2023. Tobacco smoking was also less common in this group from 25.8% to 23.

Flavored Vape Ban Results in Black Market Traffic
To address youth vaping, the Netherlands prohibited flavored vapes effective Jan. 1, 2024.

But although designed to target teenagers, the ban has driven an explosion of the illegal vape trade. In just the first four months of 2024, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) seized 185,000 illegal vapes. Only last week, 70,000 bottles of vape flavorings were confiscated from a single importer in Gelderland.
