Emergency responders did manage to temporarily bury the 71-year-old man in the snow. Once he was located, emergency responders used an avalanche dog to find him underneath the snow approximately one hour later. However, emergency services performed CPR for 20 minutes before it was determined that the man could not be resuscitated.
The body of the 71-year-old was airlifted off the mountain by a government helicopter. Both survivors were transported by helicopter to hospitals for medical treatment. The 34-year-old sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a doctor for evaluation.
According to a report from the Department of Emergency Services, extensive resources were used during the emergency response, including a government helicopter, three emergency aviation helicopters, multiple rescue teams, police units and three avalanche dogs. At least 30 additional avalanches were reported in the region on the same day as this avalanche. Two German citizens, a snowboarder and a skier, were also killed as a result of separate avalanches that occurred on the following day.
