Early Goals Set the Tone
Twente began their campaign a week earlier with a 1-0 victory over Swiss side FC Thun. Against the Gibraltar champions, they needed only 19 minutes to take control. Thomas van den Belt got the first, finishing from close range after a smart pass from Wout Weghorst.
Weghorst then helped himself five minutes later. The ball bounced his way, and he put it away, but he was first flagged offside. A brief VAR check followed, and the goal was given.
It was a big moment, and it handed Twente a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Lincoln Red Imps are no pushovers on home soil. They are the most successful club in Gibraltar, having ruled the domestic league for long stretches, and they reached the group stage of the Europa Conference League in 2021-22.
They showed that experience just before the break. Veteran Nano, who is 41, curled in a free kick that struck Ruud Nijstad in the Twente wall. The deflection sent goalkeeper Joël Drommel the wrong way, and the hosts had a goal back.
Twente Finish the Job
The lead didn't stay at one for long. In the 57th minute, Van den Belt got his second of the night after a lovely passing move involving Bart van Rooij and Daan Rots. That put Twente back in front by two goals.
A fourth should have arrived in the 81st minute, but Sondre Orjasaeter somehow missed a volley from point-blank range with nobody near him. Twente didn.
