Dozens of Drones Seized Amid NATO No-Fly Zone

Dutch police have seized dozens of drones, as the authorities crack down on an “ultra-high” no-fly zone imposed on The Hague during this week’s NATO summit. The ban, which was introduced last Wednesday, covers a 16-kilometer radius and enforces stricter restrictions in a central area, which will be in place until Friday.

The rules cover all civilian drones, whether used by hobbyists or companies like those in aviation or energy that already use them for inspections. Only drones flown by the police or the military, with pre-approval, are allowed.

More than 2,000 people have been arrested for defying the rules, as police promise that enforcement will be tighter than ever before. It's purely as a precaution," said Katja van Bijsterveldt, aviation officer at the Public Prosecution Service. “The purpose of a drone flight cannot be determined from the ground so all unapproved drone flights are treated as suspected threats,” she said.

Enhanced Monitoring and Sanctions
To spot unauthorized drones, law enforcement is relying on radar technology that can identify authorized aircraft and interfere with unauthorized ones. There are a number of ways for them to respond if a drone is sighted without authorization, Agen said, including on-the-ground intervention with a drone operator, disrupting communication with the drone, or a last resort: using a firearm to take the drone down.
Violators could face serious penalties, such as fines, permanent confiscation of their drones, or even legal action.

Van Bijsterveldt warns that although drones may seem benign, rules in the sky are as strict as they .
