Benin Bronzes Returned from Netherlands to Nigeria

A group of Benin Bronzes that were in the possession of the Netherlands have since been returned to Nigeria. The bronze statues were originally looted by British forces in the colonial era in 1897 but then distributed around the world through trade and museum acquisitions. Of these, 119 were held by the Dutch, mostly at Wereldmuseum in Leiden, and six by the municipality of Rotterdam.
