Dutch Embassy in Iran Closes Over Security Threats

Closing 'until further order' in the Dutch embassy in Tehran in connection with 'regional developments' and security risks, the foreign ministry said on Friday. Despite the closure, embassy staff work in the background to observe the situation and safeguard Dutch interests.

A spokesperson for the ministry stressed the need to keep a presence on the ground during unpredictable periods. "Particularly in such circumstances, it is important that the Netherlands has eyes and ears on the ground and a team there that safeguards our interests," the ministry said.

Israel Strikes Prompt Alarmed Reaction
The closure followed Israeli airstrikes against Iran and led the Dutch ministry to set up crisis teams overnight from Thursday to Friday. Both Iran and Israel now have a red travel advisory from the Dutch government as the unrest in the region mounts. Iran has been under the advisory since October 2022, and Israel's status was adjusted due to recent events.

The red advisory cites a range of potential dangers, including political repression and the possibility of arbitrary detention, for travellers to Iran. "Iranian authorities have the power to arrest and hold people without evident cause. Dutch nationals also run this risk," the ministry's warning said.

Severe Alert Against Travel
The foreign ministry advised Dutch citizens to avoid any travel to Iran. Do not go there, no matter the circumstances. It is not worth the risk," the advisory read. For those already in the country, departing to safety is strongly advised.

The embassy will not be able to provide emergency consular assistance because of the latest circumstances. Dutch nationals in Iran are urged to register on the Dutch Information Service for updates on security and official guidance.
