The fire broke out in the nature reserve Boschhuizerbergen and spread quickly in different directions. Firefighters have been creating firebreaks to stop the blaze spreading further, including along the Maasheseweg, which is aimed at stopping the fire moving northwards. The railway line running through the area has also been designated as a firebreak, although the fire has already crossed it in one area which is currently being closely monitored and actively suppressed. Some parts of the 100-hectare zone have already burned and been extinguished, but the fire is still active in other parts and conditions remain unpredictable, authorities said.
Additional Fires Break Out Across the Netherlands
Monday evening brought further wildfire incidents elsewhere in the country, suggesting that dry and windy conditions are creating elevated fire risk across multiple regions. In the Noord-Holland town of Overveen, a fire broke out in dune areas and prompted a partial evacuation of a campsite. The situation was brought under control relatively quickly, with displaced campers allowed to return by around 8 o'clock in the evening once the fire brigade had completed cleanup operations.
A separate fire also ignited in the dune area of Goedereede in Zuid-Holland and was confirmed to be under control by approximately 8:15 in the evening. Earlier in the day, emergency services had described the blaze as spreading rapidly, requiring large numbers of personnel and significant equipment to be deployed. The affected area measured roughly 150 by 50 metres before it was contained. The previous evening had also seen a dune fire in the Zuid-Holland town of Katwijk, though that incident was relatively minor, with approximately 10 square metres of natural vegetation affected.
What Residents Near Oostrum Are Being Told
Residents of Smakt and Holthees, both located near the Limburg blaze, are among those under the ongoing emergency alert. Authorities are urging them to remain indoors where possible, avoid contact with smoke, and ensure their homes are sealed to reduce exposure. The shifting wind conditions that caused the fire to expand so rapidly throughout the day continue to pose a challenge for crews on the ground, and firefighters are maintaining a strong presence along key containment lines to prevent further spread toward populated areas. Updates are expected as conditions develop through the evening and into Tuesday.
