PSV Beat Porto for First Champions League Win

PSV finally have their first Champions League victory of the campaign. On Tuesday they went to Porto and won 1-0, with Guus Til scoring the only goal. It was a much-needed lift for the Eindhoven side, who were still hurting from a surprise defeat to ADO Den Haag last weekend.

The win moves PSV into 16th place among the 36 teams, with one win, one draw and one loss so far. That spot would be enough to send them into the playoff round.

Bosz Makes Changes and Early Chances Come
Manager Peter Bosz made two big calls before kickoff. Centre-back Yarek Gasierowksi and young Bosnian winger Esmir Bajraktarevic were handed starting places, ahead of Armando Obispo and Dennis Man.

Both teams looked sharp from the start. Lutsharel Geertruida found Ivan Perisic, but his header drifted wide. At the other end, Porto winger Oskar Pietuszewski wasted a good chance inside the PSV box.

Just before the break, PSV nearly got a gift. Antonio Costa tried a backpass that landed right at the feet of Filip Kostic. The Serbian ran at goal but could only hit the outside of the post.

Til Pounces to Settle It
PSV hit the post again in the 57th minute, and the breakthrough came a minute later. Perisic's cross beat the Porto defence and reached Bajraktarevic, whose shot struck the woodwork.

The same winger then set up the goal. He fooled former PSV midfielder Pablo Rosario in the box and laid the ball off to Sven Mijnans, just outside the six-yard box. Mijnans side-footed his shot, and it looked destined to go wide until Til appeared in the right spot to turn it in.

Soon after the hour mark, Bajraktarevic tested Porto keeper Diogo Costa with a shot from Mijnans' pass, and Costa made a sharp reflex save.

Kovar's Scares and the Feyenoord Test
PSV keeper Matej Kovar had a nervy spell. His pass was intercepted, which gave Porto a dangerous chance. He partly made up for it by saving Andre Silva's shot, and then Victor Froholdt's effort was cleared off the line by Geertruida.

A minute later, the Slovenian came out and lost the race to the ball against Alberto Costa. The Porto defender raced toward goal knowing one touch would finish it, but Sergino Dest sprinted in from the side and beat the Brazilian to it.

It was a vital win, and PSV now turn to the Eredivisie. On Sunday they face league leaders Feyenoord, who sit four points clear of Bosz's team. Feyenoord play Real Betis in the Champions League tomorrow.
