PSV and Twente Run Riot
PSV had an easy day against Willem II, who were playing their first game under manager Jurgen Streppel, back for a second spell in charge. The Eindhoven side led 2-0 at the break. Mauro Junior got the opener in the 20th minute after Willem II failed to clear the ball properly. Guus Til, who had set up that first goal with a cross, added the second just before halftime.
Ruben van Bommel headed in the third in the ninth minute of the second half, from a Sven Mijnans cross. The visitors then fell apart over the last 20 minutes. Ricardo Pepi nodded in a fourth in the 73rd minute, and Kodai Sano scored from a Pepi assist. Shruyjano Cornecion rounded off the night with his first-ever PSV goal.
PSV moved to 23 points, two behind leaders Feyenoord and one behind Ajax. Willem II sit bottom with two points from 11 games. They have no league win yet, have lost five in a row, and this was their joint heaviest defeat in the Eredivisie.
Twente's win was even bigger. It was the largest league victory in the history of the Enschede club, and the heaviest Eredivisie defeat Excelsior have ever suffered. The game was practically settled after five minutes, when Nesto Groen was sent off for stretching out a raised leg to control a high ball and catching Twente defender Robin Pröpper in the chest. Twente had faced ten-man Excelsior in Rotterdam last season and still lost, so this time they left nothing to chance.
Wout Weghorst opened the scoring in the 12th minute, heading in a Sondre Ørjasæter cross. He made it two in the 32nd minute after a neat move with Younes Taha, using a backheel before finishing it himself. A minute later he completed his hat-trick, controlling an aerial ball with his right foot and scoring. That gave the Oranje striker a perfect hat-trick, with goals from his right foot, left foot and head.
Thomas van den Belt chipped goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel in the 39th minute for the fourth. Daan Rots made it 5-0 in first-half stoppage time, Ørjasæter's fourth assist of the afternoon. Jordy Bawuah added the sixth in the 49th minute, again set up by Ørjasæter. Weghorst got his fourth in the 62nd minute from the penalty spot after Bawuah was fouled, with VAR confirming the decision.
Another penalty followed in the 71st minute for handball. Weghorst had already been substituted, so Ramiz Zerrouki stepped up and made it 8-0. Rots wrapped things up in the 82nd minute, rounding the keeper to make it 9-0. Twente now sit fourth on 23 points from 11 games, level with PSV, while Excelsior stay on 11 points with the relegation zone drawing closer.
Telstar Win, Utrecht Frustrated
Excelsior's weekend got worse when fellow strugglers Telstar beat FC Utrecht 4-2. It was coach Henk Brugge's side's first league win since the opening matchday, and their first at home this season. Tyrone Owusu, Abdelnour Soualhia, Nökkvi Thórisson and Ar'Jany Martha scored for the IJmuiden club, while Angel Alarcon and Yoann Cathline replied for the visitors.
It was an awkward afternoon for Utrecht coach Anthony Correia, who once led Telstar to promotion and then to Eredivisie survival. He was openly critical of his players afterwards, saying attitude was a bigger issue than formation. He described Telstar's defence as a white wall that his team could not break down. Utrecht had also chosen not to take supporters to the game after the trouble around their KNVB Cup tie against Kozakken Boys.
Fireworks Halt Cambuur Game
Crowd trouble remains a problem in Dutch football, as Saturday evening in Leeuwarden showed. SC Cambuur led Go Ahead Eagles 4-0 through goals from Ismaël Baouf, Jason Ceka, Billy van Duijl and Rafik El Argaioui when fireworks were thrown from the away section in the 82nd minute. The referee stopped the match. After about half an hour the game restarted, but more fireworks went off. The KNVB later confirmed, after talking to both clubs, that the remaining minutes would not be replayed and the 4-0 result would stand.
