What Happened Onboard
The pilots were flying over the Groningen region when they noticed the smoke and quickly decided the conditions on board were no longer safe enough to continue. Diverting to Schiphol was the call, and it proved to be the right one. The airport confirmed the diversion, with a spokesperson stating simply, "The aircraft did divert to Schiphol." What caused the smoke is still not clear — authorities say an investigation is currently underway.
Emergency Response and Safe Outcome
Schiphol responded with a full precautionary deployment — fire engines and ambulances were on standby as the aircraft came in to land. Fortunately, none of it was needed. Every passenger walked off the plane without assistance, and not a single injury was reported. A spokesperson for the Veiligheidsregio Kennemerland confirmed, "There were no injuries, and all passengers were able to leave the aircraft on their own." A frightening situation, no doubt — but one that ended exactly as everyone hoped.
