Suspect in Amsterdam Murder and Rape Cases Faces Arraignment

A 22-year-old man who killed 17-year-old Lisa in Duivendrecht and sexually assaulted two women in Amsterdam will go before a magistrate on Monday. The arraignment can be a telling session if he is kept in custody, and prosecutors may reveal more about the investigation.

The teen found dead in Abcoude was running away from home. The 14-year-old Lisa from Abcoude was found dead along Holterbergweg last Wednesday, around 4:15 a.m. Cycling home from a night out Amsterdam, she called the police for assistance after being approached by a man. When officers arrived, they found her body in a ditch, with numerous stab and slash wounds. There is no evidence that she was sexually assaulted, officials have said.

Other Attacks in Amsterdam
Detectives suspect the same man was behind two other incidents in the area of the Weesperzijde quay in Amsterdam. The woman was raped and brutally assaulted there at around 00:30 am on August 15. Five days earlier, a different woman was attacked in the same vicinity. Investigators had initially considered it an attempted robbery, but now believe it was an attempted sexual assault.

Suspect’s Arrest
The suspect was arrested for the Weesperzijde rape on Friday. Shortly after, police connected him to the murder of Lisa as well as the attempted assault of the other woman. He was “apprehended” inside a shelter run by COA, the Dutch agency charged with housing refugees and asylum seekers.

Police have not identified the teen, but local reports indicated he was discovered inside someone else’s room at a sprawling asylum facility in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. It is not known whether he had applied for asylum in the Netherlands or how long he had been in the country.

The suspect is awaiting arraignment as the investigation continues, according to the prosecutor’s office, which is deciding when to show the evidence.
