Emergency Response and Road Closure
Police rushed to the scene and took both of those who were injured to the hospital for treatment. Some had to be cut free by firefighters from a crashed car, and an air ambulance was sent in for urgent care.

Because of the impact, Rijkswaterstaat shut down the entire part of the highway in the direction of Maastricht from where the truck came. Traffic was confined to a single open lane in the opposing lane.

Overnight Cleanup and Investigation
Rijkswaterstaat teams have been pulling out damaged vehicles and removing scattered debris from the tarmac throughout the night.

The highway was fully reopened to traffic by early Wednesday morning.

What about the cause of this collision? Police are investigating what caused the truck to cross into oncoming lanes. It is a sobering reminder of just how swiftly a catastrophe can grind travel to a halt and put human life at risk.
