Dutch Man Accused of Airbnb Rental Scam

A 32-year-old man from Noordwijk has been arrested on suspicion of conning house hunters by renting out holiday homes he had only rented temporarily from Airbnb.

Fraudulent Scheme Targeting Renters
Prosecutors had said the man cheated 17 victims and robbed one of an expensive watch, totalling nearly €64,000. He rented holiday homes for short periods, mostly in the four largest Dutch cities, and then advertised them as long-term rentals on Marktplaats.

The suspect set up viewings and took deposits, plus a month's rental from victims. Renters had made it to what they thought was their new home, only to find the property wasn't ready for them and the suspect had vanished. Not only did some victims lose money, but they were rendered homeless in relinquishing their earlier accommodations.

Court orders and their effect on victims
"Far too long he was able to grossly abuse the housing shortage," the suspect caused severe damage," prosecutors said at a court hearing on Tuesday. Victims, they said, not only lost their savings but also their homes, their sense of security and their trust in others.

Prosecutors are calling for a three-year prison sentence – with six months deferred – and compensation for the victims.
