Dutch Men Held After Belgian Drug Lab Raid

Two Dutchmen were arrested by Belgian police after they found an amphetamine lab in a deserted farmhouse on Thursday evening in the town of Geel. The 27-year-old and 28-year-old suspects were detained for their alleged production and circulation of narcotics, adding to growing concerns about the rising Dutch crime rate.

Strong Odor and Hazardous Setup
Police were tipped to the location by an anonymous source. When inside the building, officers smelled a strong chemical odour. In the barn near the house, suspects were discovered among drums, jerrycans, gas bottles, boxes and a number of kettles used for drug processing.

Police and Civil Protection Involved
An inquiry by the Clan Lab Response Unit revealed that amphetamines were being manufactured at the property and they located commercial volumes of precursors — chemicals used to manufacture synthetic drugs — at the property. Because of the hazardous materials, civil protection teams were being brought in to ensure their safe disposal, as authorities suspected the involvement of a professional drugs dealer.

The two men were briefly interrogated after they were arrested and have been in custody while investigators investigate their full complicity and whether others were involved in the operation.
