Schoof emphasized he does not want to cause panic but urged Europe to remain alert. "It is not certain that a Russian attack will come. I don't want to scare anyone," he said. However, he stressed that European countries must take joint measures "to prevent that."
Recent developments show that Russia has significantly expanded its military presence near Finland. The country is also constructing new railway lines and upgrading current rail and road systems along the border — changes Schoof called "important" and potentially linked to troop movements and logistics.
Schoof Discusses Rail Expansion with Finnish President
The Dutch prime minister discussed the issue with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. According to Schoof, Finland still has strong faith in its existing defense capabilities. While there is currently no immediate reason for alarm, Schoof said the infrastructure developments could mark a shift that demands stronger defensive actions.
He also mentioned growing concern over Russian sabotage activities. With the Netherlands positioned along the North Sea — where vital internet and data cables lie — the country is particularly vulnerable. "These cables are easy to break, or equipment can be placed on them," Schoof warned. The Dutch government now plans to boost its defense spending, though specific figures have not been revealed.
EU Urged to Maintain Pressure on Russia
Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Caspar Veldkamp also addressed the issue following a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Warsaw. He stated that the European Union must keep up the pressure on Russia to stop the ongoing war in Ukraine.
"We see that Russia does not yet have any serious plans for peace," Veldkamp said, adding that attacks on civilian targets continue. He also stressed the importance of maintaining and expanding current sanctions. Although renewing six-month sanctions packages remains challenging due to opposition from some countries like Hungary, Veldkamp remains confident. "I assume that the 17th package will also be successful," he added.
