Support from EU Member States
Veldkamp's proposal was backed by 17 of the EU's 27 member states, more than the minimum of 14 needed for official adoption under EU rules. France, Spain and Ireland had already voiced support for the proposal on Monday, while Sweden and Finland signed up to the call at Tuesday's meeting. The emerging common view reflects the EU's shared alarm at the situation in Gaza.
At home there is growing pressure in the Netherlands for more action. The CDA party is demanding for some trade agreements with Israel to be put on hold and sanctions to be imposed on the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu government. Veldkamp said the EU move as it stands already sends a clear signal and the Netherlands would wait for the results of the inquiry.
Discussion and Next Steps
Kaja Kallas admitted that it would "necessitate a very, very difficult discussion with regard to Gaza" for EU ministers. While it is confirmed that the investigation is happening, when that will start is still uncertain at this point.
