EU to Investigate Israel Over Human Rights Claims

The EU has agreed to probe Israel for claims of human rights abuses, according to a request made by Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp. The proposal received the required vote during a joint E.U. meeting of foreign and defense ministers in Brussels on Tuesday. The case will be pursued by EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas, said Veldkamp. "This is a very strong sign," he said, of the significance of the E.U. vote.

Veldkamp stressed the necessity of the situation saying, "With this, we are signifying that it is not just all willy nilly. We are extremely concerned about the human rights situation in Gaza. He called for Israel to stop its military operations and completely lift the humanitarian blockade as well.

Support from EU Member States

Veldkamp's proposal was backed by 17 of the EU's 27 member states, more than the minimum of 14 needed for official adoption under EU rules. France, Spain and Ireland had already voiced support for the proposal on Monday, while Sweden and Finland signed up to the call at Tuesday's meeting. The emerging common view reflects the EU's shared alarm at the situation in Gaza.

At home there is growing pressure in the Netherlands for more action. The CDA party is demanding for some trade agreements with Israel to be put on hold and sanctions to be imposed on the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu government. Veldkamp said the EU move as it stands already sends a clear signal and the Netherlands would wait for the results of the inquiry.

Discussion and Next Steps
Kaja Kallas admitted that it would "necessitate a very, very difficult discussion with regard to Gaza" for EU ministers. While it is confirmed that the investigation is happening, when that will start is still uncertain at this point.
