The decision follows India's airstrikes on several locations in Pakistan, in retaliation for a deadly attack in Kashmir carried out by militants. The attack resulted in at least 26 deaths and 46 injuries in Pakistan. This attack has significantly increased the strain between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the disputed Kashmir region.
Modi had been scheduled to visit several countries in mid-May, including Norway, Croatia, and the Netherlands. However, the visit to the Netherlands will now be delayed indefinitely. In addition to Modi's visit, Dutch airline KLM has stopped flying over Pakistan's airspace for safety reasons. This move was confirmed by KLM, following a series of similar actions by other international airlines, including British Airways, Lufthansa, and Air France.
The Dutch airline spokesperson mentioned that the decision to avoid Pakistani airspace was based on safety concerns and would be assessed continuously as the situation unfolds. Although the length of the flight detours was not specified, the airline assured passengers that their safety remained a top priority.
KLM had earlier planned to maintain its regular flights over Pakistan, but after the escalating conflict, many airlines have opted to reroute their flights to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members.
This latest development underscores the growing tensions in the region and highlights the broader impact of geopolitical conflicts on international travel.
