Veldkamp Calls for EU Probe into Israel's Gaza Blockade

Veldkamp Calls for EU Investigation into Israel's Gaza Blockade

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Veldkamp, has called for a European investigation into Israel's ongoing blockade of Gaza, arguing that it violates international treaties on human rights and democratic principles. According to Veldkamp, these principles were established in agreements between Israel and the European Union, which he believes Israel is no longer respecting.

Blockade Against International Law

In a statement to NOS, Veldkamp expressed concern over the Israeli blockade, describing it as contrary to international humanitarian law. He acknowledged Israel's right to self-defense but argued that the current scale of action goes beyond what is justifiable. "This is really a line in the sand," said Veldkamp, emphasizing the need for a clear political signal to Israel. He also pointed to the Israeli government's recent decision to expand operations in Gaza and plans to reoccupy or even destroy the Gaza Strip.

New Aid System's Non-Compliance

Veldkamp also criticized Israel's new aid system for Gaza, stating that it does not meet the humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence. In a letter to Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, Veldkamp questioned the system's adherence to these essential principles, despite many details still being unclear. He also called for the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas and stated that there should be no future role for Hamas in Gaza's administration.

EU-Israel Association Agreement

The EU-Israel Association Agreement was originally created to enhance political and economic cooperation between Israel and the EU. As part of the agreement, there is an action plan outlining the cooperation terms. Veldkamp has indicated that the Netherlands will no longer support the extension of the action plan or any further collaborations until an investigation into Israel's adherence to human rights and democratic principles is carried out. The Netherlands holds the power to block the extension through a veto.

First Time Condemnation of Israel's Actions

This marks the first time that Minister Veldkamp has condemned Israel's actions in Gaza so strongly. Previously, Veldkamp had expressed concerns but did not publicly suggest that Israel was violating its agreements with the EU. However, there is now broader support within Europe for taking a firmer stance. Veldkamp is set to attend an informal meeting of EU ministers in Warsaw to discuss this new direction.

Increased Pressure on Israel

There has been growing pressure on the Netherlands to take stronger action against Israel's attacks on Gaza. In March, a majority of the Dutch House of Representatives voted in favor of investigating the treaty between Israel and the EU. Additionally, five major aid organizations recently called on the Dutch government to push Israel toward a change in its approach.

Diplomacy and Changing Political Course

Veldkamp had previously advocated for behind-the-scenes diplomacy as the best way to secure the release of Israeli hostages and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. However, he noted that the chances of a ceasefire had diminished significantly. Veldkamp observed that the Netanyahu government appears to be shifting its political course.

Response from Geert Wilders

Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right PVV party, responded to Veldkamp's statements, calling him a "weak minister" for siding with anti-Israel demonstrators. Veldkamp dismissed Wilders' criticism, saying it was to be expected. He reaffirmed that the Dutch cabinet, which includes ministers from the PVV, speaks with a unified voice on the issue of Israel.
