Wilders Threatens Exit Over Asylum Policy Again

The PVV leader, Geert Wilders, has again pledged that the PVV will pull out of the coalition if most of the measures he proposed in the field of migration are not included in the coalition agreement. Wilders said in a social media message that if his government agreed to minimum of ten of his demands "otherwise we will not join."

Wilders presented his proposals last week and made a similar threat, though he did not give any deadline for action. His wish list is drastic: make a complete asylum freeze, stop impacts of family reunification, guard national borders with military and revoking Dutch nationality from criminals with dual nationality.

Legal Analysts Skeptical Demand Can be Met
Some of Wilders' ideas have been dismissed as unrealistic or illegal. "In legal terms, it's simply not possible to refuse asylum at the border based on European and national laws," said Michael Yap, an asylum lawyer. He also observed blocking family reunification was clearly at odds with existing legal safeguards.

On Monday evening, however, coalition party leaders are to discuss Wilders' proposals with one another, despite the legal issue. The BBB party is said to be in support while NSC and VVD seem less troubled. These two parties have urged the PVV member of the State secretary Marjolein Faber put first implementation of the asylum policies that are inside the coalition with each other.

Threat of Political Crisis Again and Again
This is not the first time Wilders has threatened to cause a government crisis over migration. He has issued similar warnings in the past but has not acted on any of them. As the coalition discussions continue, it's unclear whether the latest threat will result in real political consequences, or whether it will mean more backroom posturing.
