The win lifted the Leeuwarden side to 73 points, 20 points ahead of third-placed Willem II, who still have six matches left. ADO Den Haag, currently at the top of the league, confirmed their promotion to the top division in the week before, after defeating Jong FC Utrecht.
Cambuur started the game in top form at De Oude Meerdijk with a sixth-minute goal by Ichem Ferrah. Ferrah scored after receiving the ball from Tonry Rölke, beating two defenders, and finishing it off with a powerful shot.
Fabian Kvam scored Cambuur's second goal by heading in a ball that was sent from Tomas Galvez in the 21st minute. Two minutes later, Kvam scored again with a shot into the lower part of the right corner.
Romano Postema, however, brought Emmen to within one goal before halftime when he converted a left-wing cross into the upper right corner. In the second half, Ichem Ferrah scored again to restore Cambuur's three-goal lead after cutting inside. Freddy Quispel scored again for Emmen, but by the end of the match, Coach Henk de Jong and Cambuur's players and staff were celebrating on the sideline.
Cambuur was close to securing promotion after losing 4-3 to Jong AZ, but would have secured earlier promotions with at least a tie or victory and a De Graafschap loss.
Cambuur will return to the Eredivisie for the first time since the end of the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons after finishing in 17th during their last campaign, and their resurgence began with Henk de Jong replacing Sjors Ultee as head coach. Last season, Cambuur finished in the third position, just failing to secure a promotion, like ADO Den Haag.
This marks the fifth time that Cambuur will be promoted to the Eredivisie, after similar promotions in 1992, 1998, 2013, and 2021, and Henk de Jong was the head coach during those promotions, and he was a key factor in both title years in 2013 and 2021 and also when he was coach of De Graafschap at the time of their promotion in 2018.
On the other hand, Emmen are also in their third season in a row playing in the Eerste Divisie after being relegated to the Eredivisie in 2023.
