A Match Full of Twists
The game swung back and forth from start to finish. England raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Jude Bellingham, only for Mexico to hit back with a goal of their own. Things got tougher for England early in the second half when defender Jarell Quansah was shown a red card, reducing the Three Lions to ten men. Despite the setback, Kane converted a penalty to restore England's two-goal cushion at 3-1.
The drama wasn't over yet. Kane conceded a penalty at the other end, which Raul Jimenez calmly slotted home to make it 3-2 and set up a nerve-shredding final stretch. England held firm, defending with composure and grit to seal a historic victory. Notably, Mexico had gone unbeaten in ten previous World Cup matches played in Mexico City across 1970, 1986, and now 2026 — a run England's win finally ended.
Kane and Tuchel Praise Team Spirit
Speaking after the match, Kane, who has now scored six goals in the tournament, said every player had to reach deep within themselves to get the job done. He pointed to the number of players who stepped up when it mattered and said the team's togetherness had been tested and proven under real pressure. According to him, facing adversity away from home brought the squad closer together and created memories the group will carry forward.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel echoed that sentiment, saying he was extremely proud of how his players responded whenever momentum shifted against them. He noted that the team never lost belief even during the toughest moments and said everyone gave their all on the pitch. Tuchel called it a step forward for the squad and said the focus now turns fully to the next challenge.
Looking ahead, England will meet an in-form Norway side in the quarter-finals. Norway reached this stage after a surprising 2-1 win over Brazil, with star striker Erling Haaland scoring twice. Kane acknowledged Norway's quality, calling them a dangerous side, but said the team would first take time to enjoy the Mexico win before turning attention to preparations for the next match.
