Through the years, the stadium has hosted international stars of the stature of Michael Jackson, U2, Madonna, and Bruce Springsteen. Now the Dutch band Di-rect has the honour of bringing this icon to an end.
And the group is throwing its energy into these last performances. Die-hard fan Bianca posted about her fan relationship with the popular band: “I’m going to Di-rect for 25 years. I was 13 the first time I saw them live and had to bring my mom with me. Even then, we were right at the front. Now, it’s a different animal altogether.”
A powerful final performance
You'll Never Walk Alone played as Di-rect took to the stage at around 9:00 PM to cheer fans. The band delivered about twenty songs, some of which have been popular hits like Times are Changing and Soldier On. The fans had a night to remember, for the music and for the building’s history.
End of an era at De Kuip
De Kuip will close its doors after Saturday’s show. The stadium is canceling music events because of new noise laws and impending construction in the area. There is nothing there any longer other than football at its core from now on.
Tonight and tomorrow are the last performances. “It’s a very special feeling,” bassist Van Wageningen said. “We’re ending the music chapter at De Kuip. After that, it will again be a football temple.”
