Freek Rikkerink's Cancer Diagnosis Stuns Dutch Artists

The Dutch music world and fans are reeling from the announcement that Freek Rikkerink, part of the duo Suzan & Freek, has been diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. On Tuesday, the duo shared that recovery is no longer possible and that they will be halting all professional activities.


The emotional news was posted on Instagram and quickly received an outpouring of support. Fellow singer Ilse DeLange, who was set to coach alongside Suzan & Freek in The Voice of Holland next season, wrote, "How terrible. I wish you all the strength and love to get through this together."


DJ Sunnery James, who performed with them at De Vrienden van Amstel LIVE, expressed his sympathy, as did Roxeanne Hazes, Typhoon, and Bente, each sharing their heartbreak and wishing the couple strength and love.

A Mix of Grief and Hope
Guus Meeuwis and his wife Manon Meijers were visibly affected. Meeuwis wrote, "What indescribably terrible news. Lots of strength and all the love for you both," while Meijers added, "The worst nightmare and the dearest wishes," referring to the couple expecting a child.

TV presenter Nicolette van Dam said she was at a loss for words. Jim Bakkum, who has known Suzan & Freek for nearly a decade, responded with emotion: "My heart in my throat and tears in my eyes. This is not allowed."

Beauty influencer Nikkie de Jager described the situation as "a terribly unfair world." Comedian Jochem Myjer also shared his sadness, saying, "All the love I can find is coming your way."

Public Outpouring of Emotion
Concert venue Ziggo Dome, where Suzan & Freek were scheduled to perform three more times next week, announced the shows have been cancelled and offered their support to the couple. "Words fail us after this incredibly sad news," the venue stated.

Within just an hour of the announcement, over 37,000 people had already responded to the post, showing just how deeply the news has affected fans and fellow artists across the country.
