Big Boost in Price of Boxed Chips
The new packaging is advertised as being durable and resealable, but the fact that it also costs so much more has customers feeling ripped off. For example:
A bag of Lay's Max Natural Chips sells for €10.87 per kilo, while the boxed variety costs €19.12 per kilo.
Doritos Cheese Chips are priced at €10.99 per kilo in a bag but are €18.50 per kilo in a box.
When you see bags and boxes, with weight changing between them, the difference's not apparent and everything doesn't look equal. That makes it difficult for consumers to notice right away the increased cost per chip.
No Comment From Manufacturer
PepsiCo, which owns the Lay's name, has not replied to requests for comment about the pricing or when and whether the traditional bags will be discontinued.
The move comes in the midst of mounting public resentment over shrinkflation — in which food producers reduce product sizes while keeping prices the same, or higher.
