This project was already thought up by the late mayor Eberhard van der Laan in 2015, and he saw to it that this part of the Stopera building is returned to the Amsterdam people.
Amstel 1 is conceived as a meeting place for food, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Most of the spaces have already been claimed, but the initiators are still calling for local talents to apply. Café, a restaurant, and a few craft/creative shops would have space to open.
Locally Inspired, Globally Influenced
Mirage's Amstel 1 was mobbed. The mission for Amstel 1 became reality with Markus Konings, Jeroen van de Kraats, Yourick Fokker, and Igor Sancisi.
They are looking to welcome small local businesses that specialize in organic, sustainable, fresh produce or something a little more unusual that isn't food related.
"We are doing groundwork," Sancisi said. "But Amstel 1's essence will be the city and the creative entrepreneurs making use of it." It's a showcase for everything that's happening in Amsterdam."
Amstel 1 is inspired by some of those successful international markets — "Markthalle Neun in Berlin, LX Factory in Lisbon" among them — but the concept will be adapted, in a very Amsterdam way.
With that long-awaited market, Amsterdam City Hall won't just be a seat of government but also a lively place for locals and tourists to shop, eat, and immerse themselves in the city's spirit.
