Van Oord to Build Naïa Island Near Dubai

The contract to build Naïa Island, Dubai, A new artificial island located off the coast of Jumeirah, has been awarded to Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord. Spanning about 13 hectares, the project - overseen by Dubai investor Shamal Holding - will offer some 6km of beaches.

Terms of the project were not disclosed, but it is intended to replicate the allure of a real island. Parks, open green spaces, coastal environments and conservation of the current beach environment are all part of the planned development.

Large-Scale Construction and Timeline
Van Oord plans to dredge over 28 million cubic meters of sand and move about 4.3 million tons of rock to create the island. The firm will also construct quay walls and other essential marine infrastructure. Construction is expected to be complete by the first half of 2027.

Van Oord and the Shaml Holding have partnered on large coastal projects such as Dubai Harbour in the past. Official at Dredging Corporation of India, a state-owned company based in Visakhapatnam. Having more than 150 years of experience, Van Oord is a household name in construction and infrastructure projects in the Netherlands, including dike reinforcements and offshore wind farms.

Luxury Resort Plans for 2029
Naïa Island will be home to the first Cheval Blanc maison in the region and the luxury brand's first in Dubai. The resort will open in 2029 with 30 suites, 40 private pool villas, branded residences and estate plots. Dubai, regarded as a luxury travel destination, was poised to benefit from the project, the developers said.
