Public Opinion is Divided in the Netherlands
Dutch natives provide conflicting responses regarding the attacks on Iran. Nearly forty percent of respondents view the attacks in a positive light and believe the attack against the Iranian regime will limit the future potential for Iran to become a nuclear threat. Therefore, they believe the attacks marked an early step towards mitigating that threat.
However, an equally significant portion of survey responders completely disagree with the attacks on Iran, and instead express concern that if global superpowers are permitted to engage in military strikes against another nation without facing consequences, it could undermine the current global order. Further, survey responders fear that permitting such actions by global powers would generate a dangerous precedent and create increased instability.
Despite the opposition to the attacks, only 17 percent of respondents believe the bombing of Iran leads to decreased overall global physical threat. The vast majority remain concerned regarding the long-term implications of the increasing tensions.
Concerns Exist Over Global Stability and Peace
Due to the increasing tensions with Iran, there are strong fears regarding global peace and global stability throughout the Middle East. Approximately 80 percent of the respondents expressed some concern regarding the security of that area of the world and the spread of world conflict due to the current tensions.
While nearly half of those polled believe the tensions with Iran may be the beginning of a world war, a small percentage believe the attacks will produce any substantive political change within Iran that would lead to increased democracy.
Dutch Hesitant about Military Support
As tensions continue to increase with Iran, France has requested that the Dutch government deploy a naval frigate to the Mediterranean Sea to provide military support in the area. Generally speaking, there does not seem to be any public support for the Dutch government deploying military forces into the Mediterranean Sea. Approximately two-thirds of respondents believe that the Dutch should not get involved in the conflict. Many feel that the Netherlands should refrain from all military involvement whatsoever in order to remain neutral and insulate itself from further escalation of global tensions.
