The vandalism began at about 7 p.m., after Cambuur played in the new arena for the first time. Dozens of men barged their way into the dilapidated old stadium, where they smashed windows, tore seats out of the stands, and inflicted damage on a canopy near the field, officials said.

Fireworks were also launched inside the compound.

The police response was swift, talking directly with the crowd to defuse the situation. Officials said no fines were levied during the incident.

The vandalism had come during a day of celebration for the club, which featured performances by artists including Mental Theo and a fireworks display to commemorate the grand opening of the Kooi Stadion.

SC Cambuur played Feyenoord in the first match at the new stadium, which had a result of 4-1 for Feyenoord.
