The 59-year-old Pechtold has decades long experience in the public sector. He will be sworn in on 4 September following the retirement of the mettlesome Marja van Bijsterveldt, who steps down on 2 September.
Extensive Political Career
Since 2019, Pechtold was CBR-director (Central office for motor vehicle driver testing). He held a range of high-profile government positions throughout his career. On a party level he was the D66 party leader from 2002 to 2005, mayor of Wageningen from 2003 to 2005 and Minister of the Interior from 2005 to 2006. From 2006 to 2018, he was D66's political leader, and had a significant influence on which direction the party took.
Appointment Warmly Welcomed
Reaction The news that Pechtold will return to local government was welcomed. Wouter Kolff congratulated him: "Congratulations to Mr. Pechtold, his family and of course also the municipality of Delft on this beautiful present!"
With his appointment Delft gets a seasoned politican as new mayor, and all experience of the national political stage will return to the local one.
