In a statement on the party's website, VVD lauded her leadership, saying she understands "what is needed to make our country freer, safer and more prosperous." The 47-year-old became party leader in August 2023 in succession to Mark Rutte having served as Minister of Justice. She also served as State Secretary for Economic Affairs.

Yesilgöz's berth atop the VVD list has been supported by the party board, though her lead candidacy wasn't set in stone. Local VVD departments may propose alternative candidates until 23 June. If they do, a poll of party members will decide the ultimate pick.

The nomination is a "great honor," Yesilgöz said and that she looks forward to leading the VVD into an election once again.
