A Tough Night in Hungary
The match started poorly for Twente. Ferencváros took the lead midway through the first half after Toon Raemaekers stepped up and calmly converted a penalty, awarded following a foul by Thomas van den Belt. Things then took a dramatic twist just before halftime when Ferencváros were reduced to ten men. A VAR review upgraded Philippe Rommens' challenge on Ramiz Zerrouki to a straight red card, after replays showed he had stamped on his opponent's ankle.
Even with a man down, the Hungarian side didn't sit back. Early in the second half, Lenny Joseph added to their tally with a low, well-placed shot that beat the goalkeeper. It was Joseph's third goal of the tie, having already scored twice in the first leg.
Late Fightback Falls Just Short
Twente refused to go down without a fight. Wout Weghorst brought them back into contention in the 82nd minute, glancing home a header to make it 2-1 on the night. Just four minutes later, Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink found the net with another header, levelling the score at 2-2. But the comeback arrived too late to change the overall outcome, and Twente exited the competition on aggregate.
Their European story isn't over, though. Twente will now compete in the Conference League, facing Slovakia's FC DAC 1904 in the third qualifying round, with matches set for August 6 and 13. A win over the Slovak side would leave them just one playoff round away from securing a spot in the Conference League's league phase.
