Your Data to Train Meta's AI
Meta expects to gather or use public user data to help train its generative AI, which is able to produce texts, images and other media. This includes things you have previously shared on Facebook and Instagram — posts, reactions, and photos.
Notably, private messages and content from users under 18 are exempt, Meta says. However, this decision has had privacy implications, especially because many of its users didn't have in mind that what they posted would be used for AI training.
This isn't the first time that Meta has tried to gain access to such data. A similar push was paused last year after European regulators pushed back. This time, Meta has allowed people who are opposed to opt out manually.
How to Opt Out of Meta's Use of AI Data
If you take no action, Meta will assume you consented. To prevent your data from being used:
Open Facebook or Instagram (either the app or the website).
Go to Settings.
Navigate to Privacy Center.
Find the notice that starts with "We're always looking to improve AI across Meta."
Click on the blue "Appeal" link in the message.
Input your e-mail address and (optionally) a reason for your protest.
Click Send. You will get a confirmation email when your appeal is reviewed.
Note: If you've connected your Facebook account and Instagram account, one opt out will apply to both platforms.
Although Meta claims that this step is necessary for transparency, the company hasn't said whether you can withdraw your consent at a later date, after AI training starts.
