Mobile Data Usage in the Netherlands Hits Record 16% Rise

In the second quarter of 2025, the Netherlands experienced a record-high level of mobile data usage, which increased by 16% from the previous quarter, creating a national record high, fueled, in part, by the greater adoption of home internet services (offering a 5G-based product).

5G Home Internet Increases Mobile Data Usage
According to data released by the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), mobile data consumption increased to 739 million gigabytes in the second quarter. The increase follows a first quarter that was also up 7% to supersede a record-setting quarter, with widespread use of mobile data consumption of 619 million gigabytes, as seen during the second quarter of 2023, which recorded growth of over 20%.

While the regulator pointed out that they could not determine a cause of this rapid increase in data usage, they provided a possible example in Odido's Klik&Klaar internet. The service allows subscribers to utilize 5G internet in their home (without a traditional requirement) and this increase in usage contributes to a decrease in mobile and fixed-line usage data statistics.

Increases in Independent Providers and Fibre Subscribers
Independent providers (without their own networks) also experience growth, including providers such as 50+, Lyca and Lebara, all announcing customer growth to date on a global basis. For the total SIM card providers calculated (all three) increased 4.9 million to over 5.4 million, increasing their MT altogether from 15–20% in the first quarter to 20–25% quarter.

In addition, ACM states that there has been steady growth in fibre-type broadband connections, with the number of households subscribing to a fibre product in the second quarter growing by 2.8% in the second quarter (of 2025), in continued growth of digital transformation.
