No Trains at Rotterdam Centraal on May 24–25 Due to System Upgrades

Train travel in and out of Rotterdam Centraal will be completely halted over the weekend of Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25. The disruption is due to necessary replacement work on the train protection system in the area, rail operator ProRail announced.

Replacement Buses and Subway Alternatives
The Dutch Railways (NS) will provide replacement buses along several routes. Travelers can also use the Rotterdam metro, although NS tickets will not be valid on metro line E between Den Haag Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal, which is expected to be very busy.

Travelers from Schiedam or Delft heading towards Gouda or Utrecht are advised to reroute via Den Haag Centraal. NS tickets will be valid on Rotterdam metro lines between Schiedam Centrum, Beurs, Rotterdam Blaak, Capelsebrug, and Rotterdam Alexander.

More Disruptions Planned in the Future
This is the first of four weekends when train traffic around Rotterdam Centraal will be completely shut down due to infrastructure upgrades. The other planned weekends are:

  1. November 8–9, 2025

  2. June 13–14, 2026

  3. November 7–8, 2026

The current train safety system, which controls signals and switches, is over 25 years old. Despite several upgrades, ProRail says it is now due for full replacement to ensure safety and efficiency.

In addition, fewer trains will operate to and from Den Haag Hollands Spoor during the previous weekend on May 17–18, with travelers warned of crowded platforms and longer waiting times.
